It was in late 1998, after 14 years of marriage to Christopher Guest, with whom he shares two children, that Curtis was first confronted with his addiction to alcohol and painkillers.
In an interview with Variety published in November 2019, she recalled how, while preparing dinner for the family, she took five Vicodin tablets drizzled with wine.
A friend who was staying at her home saw her and confronted her.
“The feedback was ready,” said Curtis. ‘Now I knew someone did. I have been harboring a secret addiction to Vicodin for a long time – more than 10 years. ‘
A few months later, she told Variety, she found an article in Esquire magazine by writer Tom Chiarella entitled ‘Vicodin, My Vicodin’ and it inspired her to attend a recovery meeting.
She’s been sober ever since.
