Jaguar Land Rover’s luxury brand Jaguar will be fully electric by 2025 and the automaker will launch e-models across its entire line in 2030, he said on Monday, as he joined a global race to develop zero-emission vehicles.

JLR, owned by Indian Tata Motors, said its Land Rover brand will launch six pure electric models in the next five years, with the first arriving in 2024.

Known for its iconic high-performance E-Type model in the 1960s and 1970s, Jaguar faces the same challenge as many other automakers – making the transition to electric vehicles while maintaining the feel and power of a high-performance combustion engine model. Lux.

JLR said it will keep all three British factories open while electrifying its range. “It is time to rethink the next chapter for both brands,” said Chief Executive Thierry Bollore.

Tata Motors shares were up 3% after the announcement.

JLR said its electrical plans for Jaguar would be centralized at the Solihull plant, but abandoned plans to build the brand’s flagship XJ at its Castle Bromwich facility in central England.

Bollore, who took over as CEO in September, said the Castle Bromwich plant would focus on “non-production” activities in the long run. He provided few details.

JLR said it will spend about 2.5 billion pounds ($ 3.5 billion) annually on electrification technologies and the development of connected vehicle services.

The company said it is also investing in the development of hydrogen fuel cells in anticipation of a future switch to hydrogen for energy vehicles.

The automaker will have prototypes using hydrogen fuel cells on Britain’s roads next year, she said, as part of a long-term investment plan.

Automobile groups around the world are pursuing zero-emission strategies to meet stringent CO2 emission targets in Europe and China.

Volkswagen’s luxury car brand Bentley Motors said in November that its model range will be fully electric by 2030, and last month General Motors Co said it intended to have a zero emission line by 2035.

Several countries have also announced bans on the sale of new fossil fuel vehicles. In the UK, this ban is expected to take effect in 2030.

JLR said it was a “path to” double-digit operating profit and positive cash flow, and aims to achieve positive cash by excluding debt by 2025.
