Jack Flaherty of St. Louis Cardinals and Mike Soroka of the Atlanta Braves win arbitration cases

NEW YORK – St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Jack Flaherty and Atlanta Braves pitcher Mike Soroka won their wage arbitration cases on Saturday, while Tampa Bay Rays reliever Ryan Yarbrough lost the case.

Flaherty received a raise from $ 604,500 to $ 3.9 million from referees Howard Edelman, Steven Wolf and Walt De Treux, who heard the arguments on February 5. The Cardinals had submitted $ 3 million.

Soroka received an increase from $ 583,500 to $ 2.8 million from referees Frederic Horowitz, Margaret Brogan and Robert Herzog, who heard arguments on Friday. Braves had argued for $ 2.1 million.

Yarbrough received a raise of $ 578,500 to $ 2.3 million from referees Allen Ponak, Mark Burstein and Jules Bloch, instead of his $ 3.1 million order.

Players and teams have split into six decisions so far, with four players – Los Angeles Dodgers catcher Austin Barnes, Chicago Cubs outfielder Ian Happ, San Francisco Donovan Solano second baseman and Atlanta Dansby Swanson shortstop – scheduled for hearings next week.

All cases are being discussed at Zoom this year due to the pandemic, not in person.

Flaherty, 25, had 4-3 with an ERA of 4.91 in nine games during the reduced season, eliminating 49 and walking 16 in 40 1/3 innings.

Soroka, 23, went 0-1 with an ERA of 3.95 in three matches. His year ended when he broke the right Achilles tendon when launching against the New York Mets on August 3. Soroka had surgery four days later and hopes to be ready for the opening day.

A 29-year-old southpaw, Yarbrough was 1-4 with a 3.56 ERA in nine games and two relief appearances, eliminating 44 and walking 12 out of 55 2/3 innings. He was 1-0 with an ERA of 3.68 in two postseason matches and five relief appearances, helping the Rays reach the World Series, where they lost to the Dodgers.
