Black’s character is CL4P-TP, a robot that comes to be known as Claptrap, who is quite sarcastic and has nothing invested in the team around him.

The game takes place on a planet called Pandora, following a group of ‘safe hunters’ looking for a safe that allegedly contains alien technology and other riches.

Borderlands was first launched in 2009, selling more than 2 million units that year alone, with a series of downloadable content add-ons (DLC) released, including one with a Claptrap focus dubbed the New Robot Revolution by Claptrap.

The game’s developers, Gearbox Software, followed the original with Borderlands 2 in 2012, Borderlands: The Prequel-Sequel in 2014 and Borderlands 3 in 2019.

Black will meet with director Eli Roth, who is taking over the direction of Borderlands and previously directed Black in 2018’s The House With a Clock In its Walls.

“I’m so excited to be meeting Jack, this time in the recording booth,” said director Roth in a statement.

‘Claptrap is the funniest character in the game, and Jack is perfect for bringing him to the big screen,’ Roth continued.

Nathan Kahane, president of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, said the cast was, ‘one of the biggest right decisions we’ve ever made.

“Everyone who’s ever played knows that Jack is perfect for this role. We are thrilled that he adds his endless comic energy and voice to our film – he will bring a lot to the film, ‘added Kahane.
