IT News Online – South Carolina Department of Corrections transforms the prison environment with the use of tablets

Facilities that benefit both staff and the incarcerated community

CHURCH OF FALLS, VA / ACCESSWIRE / February 18, 2021 / GTL, a trusted partner that connects people affected by incarceration with the resources and support needed to achieve success, today announced that deploying GTL tablets at the South Carolina Department of Corrections (SCDC) facilities has provided benefits to the team , imprisoned population and families waiting at home.

“We are excited about the positive impact that tablets have had,” said SCDC director Bryan Stirling. “Prisoners are communicating more with their families and this has been very helpful during the COVID-19 pandemic. Overall, it has been a great moral boost for employees and our incarcerated population.”

SCDC issued tablets to prisoners in 2020, providing a new outlet for incarcerated individuals to learn, communicate and channel their energy. People can listen to audiobooks or music, read free e-books, play games, watch movies and more. Tablets also provide ways for individuals to connect with their families and friends at home, including calls and email messages. In addition to tablets, SCDC and GTL are working on a statewide video visitation solution that can further enhance communication.

In addition to providing access to communication and entertainment applications, GTL tablets also offer educational content, which was crucial during the COVID-19 pandemic. Inmates were able to attend virtual classes and continue to fulfill their educational goals. Tablets provide access to a legal library, and SCDC uses GTL’s Learning Management System (LMS) to load its own educational and program content, making the distribution of materials a much simpler process. The same applies to other standard installation processes, such as making requests to staff and receiving communications from the director and other department employees. Tablets optimize these methods, increasing efficiency and eliminating the need for printed materials and officer involvement.

“The fact is that tablets are beneficial for everyone within a facility – officials and individuals incarcerated,” said Matthew Caesar, executive vice president of GTL, Customer Solutions. “A portable device provides dozens of resources for individuals looking to change their lives and return home as a better person.”
