Israel temporarily bans all international flights in response to the new COVID-19 strains

New variants of the coronavirus have caused Israel to enact strict travel restrictions.

The country recently announced that it will temporarily ban all flights entering or leaving the country. The decision was made to prevent the spread of new strains of the coronavirus.

Israel is banning international passenger flights as of Monday, reports Reuters. The ban will last for a week, meaning it will be in effect until the end of January.

According to Reuters, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said: “With the exception of rare exceptions, we are closing the sky tightly to prevent the entry of variants of the virus and also to ensure that we make rapid progress in our vaccination campaign.”

This news came when it was recently reported that a new variant of the coronavirus may present a greater risk of death than the original strain. The variant was first discovered in southeastern England and is considered easier to overcome than the original.

A chief scientific adviser to the British government said on Friday that, although the data is still uncertain, people infected with the new variant may have a higher risk of death.

Israel is not the only country considering strict actions in response to new strains.

Fox News previously reported that Canada is considering requiring travelers to be quarantined in a hotel at their own expense when they enter the country in response to new variants of the coronavirus.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said at a news conference on Friday that his government is prepared to impose even stricter travel regulations than the country already has.

“No one should take a vacation abroad now,” said Trudeau. “If you have a plan, cancel it. And don’t book a spring break trip.”
