Alec Baldwin’s wife, Hilaria Baldwin, is responding to accusations that she feigned her Spanish accent and lied about her heritage for years.
The Daily Beast reports a Twitter user named @lenibriscoe shared a long discussion raising questions about Hilaria, who claimed to have been born in Mallorca, Spain, and gave Spanish names to her five children with Baldwin (Carmen, Rafael Thomas, Leonardo Angel Charles, Romeo Alejandro David and Eduardo Pau Lucas). The tweets include images of Hilaria’s accent floating around, including when she said she couldn’t remember the English word for “cucumber” during an appearance on “Today” and evidence (including her directory and the old MySpace page) that she grew up in Massachusetts and attended Cambridge School of Weston, Massachusetts, under the name Hillary Hayward-Thomas.
MassLive.com reports that her mother, Dr. Kathryn Hayward, worked as an associate physician at Massachusetts General Hospital and an assistant professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, but retired from both positions in 2012. She and her husband, David L. Thomas , Jr., also co-founded The Integrative Health Collaborative in Boston in 2007. They moved to Mallorca, Spain, in 2011, the same year that a yoga instructor named “Hilaria Thomas” started dating Alec Baldwin.
The Daily Beast adds that an obituary for Hilaria’s grandfather and a wedding announcement indicate that his paternal grandfather has American roots “prior to the American Revolution” and that his grandfather’s (and mother’s children) first wife was from Nebraska.
Hilaria Baldwin, on the other hand, has a page of speakers from CAA and a biography from IMDb who say she was born in Majorca, Spain. She appeared on the cover of Hola! magazine, based in Madrid, where she was identified as Spanish. She also told the podcast “Maternity, marriage and miscarriages” in April that she did not move to the United States until she was 19 to study at New York University: “I came to school and never, never left.”
On Sunday, she admitted that her name is Hillary and she was born in Boston.
“I spent part of my childhood in Boston, part of my childhood in Spain, my family, my brother, my parents, my nephew, everyone is there in Spain now, I’m here,” she said on Instagram. “When I was a child, in this country I used the name Hillary and in Spain I used Hilaria and my family, my parents, called me Hilaria.”
Hilaria added that she grew up speaking English and Spanish and is trying to educate her children to be bilingual. She said she will “enunciate” to work as an influencer of social media and TV personality, but sometimes she mixes the two languages when speaking, especially when she is nervous or upset: “It’s not something I’m playing … I want you to be very, very clear. “
