The Rhode Island Department of Health reported 90 additional coronavirus-related deaths on Monday.

As of Friday, RIDOH had reported 2,376 deaths since the start of the pandemic – on Monday, that number was 2,466.

The three-day adjustment represented a 4% increase in the total number of deaths in the last 11 months. The agency claims that only 9 of the deaths occurred over the weekend.

The besieged agency says there was no intentional underreporting, but that it was routine – although it is the biggest correction to date.

RIDOH with 4% increase

“In the past three days, our total number of deaths has been 5, 1 and 3. However, the total number of confirmed fatalities since the start of the pandemic has increased further,” said RIDOH spokesman Joseph Wendelken.

According to RIDOH, “our mortality data is considered provisional for at least three months and is generally adjusted upwards. This is because it takes time for the causes of death to be confirmed and for us to cross-reference the different data sets. We routinely review to cross-check our case data and our general fatality data to ensure that all COVID-19 fatalities are captured.

“This generally results in the identification of COVID-19 fatalities that were not initially reported to RIDOH as COVID-19 fatalities. We did one of these routine reviews, which is why there was a greater than normal increase in the cumulative total of Today’s COVID-19 fatalities, “they added.

“We continue to have a substantial mortality rate and there is simply too much infection and transmission in Rhode Island,” said Dr. Michael Fine, former Rhode Island Health Director.

65+ Technical problems with vaccination registration

Earlier on Monday, RIDOH admitted that registration for those over 65 who wish to schedule vacations was launched late after experiencing technical problems.
