iPhone 13 to finally feature bigger batteries

Apple appears to be improving iPhone battery life with the iPhone 13 lineup, using a series of design changes, larger batteries and efficiency improvements.

IPhone 13 battery life feature

In a recent investor note seen by MacRumorsTrusted analyst Ming-Chi Kuo explained that all four models of the iPhone 13 will have larger batteries with higher capacities:

The new 2H21 ‌iPhone‌ models have a higher battery capacity than the iPhone 12 series, thanks to the compact design of many components. Consequently, the new 2H21 ‌iPhone‌ models are also slightly heavier than the ‌iPhone 12‌. The space-saving design includes integrating the SIM card slot with the motherboard, reducing the thickness of the front optical modules, etc.

The change will be implemented through a series of space-saving design options, such as integrating the SIM card slot on the motherboard and reducing the thickness of the front TrueDepth camera array.

Larger batteries in the ‌iPhone 13‌ models are likely to lead to longer battery life, in contrast to the ‌iPhone 12‌, which saw the size of the batteries be reduced compared to the previous generation. The ‌iPhone 12‌, 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max have 295 mAh, 231 mAh, 282 mAh batteries smaller than their predecessors, but the battery life has been practically the same due to efficiency improvements.

Since the launch of the ‌iPhone 12‌ line, concerns have also been raised about how 5G connectivity can harm battery life. The iPhone 12 mini, in particular, has a small battery due to its compact shape and has faced criticism for its battery life not being able to last an entire day.

A disadvantage of the internal design changes observed by Kuo is that the ‌iPhone 13‌ models must be a little heavier due to the larger batteries.

Changes to the display technology used on the ‌iPhone 13‌ Pro may also be responsible for increasing battery life. The ‌iPhone 13‌ Pro and ‌iPhone 13‌ Pro Max are widely expected to obtain ProMotion screens with varying refresh rates. In addition to providing high refresh rates of up to 120 Hz when needed, ProMotion also allows for slower refresh rates when there is less movement on the screen to improve battery life.

In addition, the A15 chip is also likely to deliver some iterative efficiency improvements to support battery life.

The ‌iPhone 13‌ line is expected to arrive later this year, featuring a smaller notch, camera stabilization with expanded sensor shift, support for Wi-Fi 6E and more.
