IPad Pro 2021 with mini LED display, says report

Apple is expected to start making the transition to mini LED screens in 2021, and a new report from Digitimes adds more corroboration. The report indicates that Apple will launch a new 12.9-inch iPad Pro with mini LED screen technology in the first quarter of 2021.

The report focuses largely on Apple’s efforts to diversify its supply chain for monitors and touch panels. BOE has obtained approval to supply OLED screens for the iPhone line, while GIS will produce touch models for the new iPad Pro with mini LED, expected to be “launched in the first quarter of 2021”.

This is not the first time that reports indicate that the iPad Pro mini LED will arrive in the first quarter of 2021, but it serves as ongoing confirmation from the supply chain that the transition is still moving ahead as planned.

What’s interesting is that reports continue to indicate that the transition from the mini LED will start first with the 12.9-inch iPad Pro, suggesting that the 11-inch iPad Pro will remain with the LCD panels for now. It is not known when the 11-inch iPad Pro can switch to mini LED.

However, Apple is expected to bring the mini LED to more than just the iPad Pro. Trustworthy Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reported earlier this month that Apple will have two new MacBook Pros with a design completely new format in 2021, and both will have mini LED panels.

As a reminder, mini LED is a new form of backlighting used for LCD screens. It includes many of the same benefits as OLED, but it can often offer greater brightness, greater energy efficiency and less risk of burning. That’s why Apple plans to use it on its devices with larger screens, instead of OLED.

At this point, it is not clear what other changes Apple has in store for the 2021 update to the iPad Pro. We expect at least an update for an A14 series processor, but we will still see if other changes are planned or not.
