Iowa Wrestler Austin DeSanto removed from Saturday night ceremony after incident after fight

ST. LOUIS (KCRG) – Iowa fighter Austin DeSanto will not participate in the team’s ceremonies on Saturday night after an incident with NCAA media officials that occurred after his fight on Saturday.

Iowa Wrestling coach Tom Brands issued the following statement on Saturday:

“Austin DeSanto will not be attending the NCAA Parade of All-Americans or the medal stand ceremony on Saturday night. DeSanto behaved inappropriately with NCAA media officials when he left the mat this afternoon and after consulting the NCAA Wrestling Committee and our administration, we made an institutional decision to stop him from tonight’s activities. ”

DeSanto issued the following statement in response:

“My behavior towards NCAA media officials before the post-game interview was wrong and I owe everyone involved a sincere apology. My language and behavior were inadequate and inexcusable. I spoke to Tom and I understand and agree with the decision. ”

DeSanto won two games on Saturday and finished the tournament 5-1, finishing third.

Spencer Lee, Jaydin Eierman and Michael Kemerer, from Iowa, are ready to fight in the championship fights on Saturday night at 6pm on ESPN.
