Iowa Hawkeyes extends men’s basketball coach Fran McCaffery to 2028

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Hawkeyes coach Fran McCaffery signed a four-year contract extension until 2027-28 on Monday, after leading eighth-placed Hawkeyes in the Big Ten tournament semifinals and his biggest NCAA tournament semifinals. since 1987.

The Hawkeyes are 21-8 and finished third in the Big Ten regular season with 14-6. They were ranked in the top 15 every week this season and reached 5th place last week. The team is in second place in the NCAA tournament and will play in the Grand Canyon on Friday in Indianapolis.

McCaffery’s annual base salary of $ 2.3 million for the next two seasons will remain unchanged. He accepted a 15% cut in pay this year to help the sports department make up for deficiencies caused by the pandemic. He is on his way to receive longevity bonuses at the end of the next two seasons.

Iowa finished in the top half of the Big Ten in eight of McCaffery’s 11 seasons and has won at least 20 games seven times. The Hawkeyes have been in the NCAA tournament for the fifth time since 2014 and feature the candidate for national player of the year and leading scorer in their school career, Luka Garza.

McCaffery is the second most winning coach of all time, with 215 wins overall and 103 wins in the Big Ten.
