With the launch of the first beta developer of iOS 14.5, we are now learning that the iOS version will have an update that allows users to unlock iPhones with facial ID, despite wearing a mask. Becoming a minor nuisance as the COVID-19 pandemic continues, Apple has discovered an alternative solution involving the Apple Watch.
Working in unison with an unlocked wrist device, looking at an iPhone while wearing a mask will unlock the lower facial recognition accuracy of the facial ID with a tactile buzz for the Apple Watch when activated. In addition, an authenticated Apple Watch can also be used to remotely lock an iPhone. Unfortunately limited to the workaround at the moment, users without the Apple wrist device will need to rely on the fastest password entry prompt introduced last May.
It is also worth noting that there are rumors that Apple is testing optical fingerprint sensors on the display that may be an important part of the next flagship smartphone lineup.
