iOS 14.4 beta suggests audio guided walking exercises for Apple Watch

Like seen by Khaos Tian on Twitter, there’s an interesting new setting in the Workout app for Apple Watch. Called “Time to walk,” the setting describes a feature where walking exercises are downloaded to the watch when connected to power and the iPhone is nearby.

This alternation appears on the watch itself and on the associated Watch application on the iPhone. Combined with evidence from 9to5Mac code investigations, it looks like Apple’s guided audio exercises are coming soon to the clock.

This feature still doesn’t seem to be functional, so we can’t test it for ourselves yet; it probably depends on server-side changes.

The “Time to Walk” brand aligns the feature with the classic “Time to Stand” reminders, which encourage users to get up and walk a little once an hour. So, perhaps when this feature is released, there will be targets for a walk once a day.

Based on the fact that these special exercises need to be downloaded and deleted automatically when completed, it follows that there is an audio track associated with these sessions.

This strongly suggests that Time to Walk exercises resemble guided audio training sessions. The 9to5Mac code findings confirm this, with references to ‘WORKOUT_GUIDED_WALK’ found in the beta source code.

Apple’s latest service, Apple Fitness +, currently does not offer any type of outdoor training. A guided audio training offer would certainly make sense for the service, but it is still unclear whether Time to Walk will require a Fitness + subscription. Strings from the source code show that the Fitness app will feature these new audio exercises, but it has not been possible to determine whether they will be available to anyone or whether they will be behind the Fitness + paywall.

In conjunction with Time to Walk, the code references indicate that Apple is also working on “Time to Push” workouts for people with physical disabilities and unable to walk. This is similar to how the Apple Watch already offers Time to Roll alerts as an alternative to Time to Stand reminders for wheelchair users.
