Investigation underway in Greenville County deputy who ran for sheriff

A police leader at the Greenville County sheriff’s office is the latest police officer in Upstate to be investigated, several police sources told the news outlet. Captain Darius Hall – who had been campaigning for sheriff a month ago – is now being investigated for a criminal investigation, we are told.

According to our sources, a criminal reference related to Hall was made to the SC State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) during the Republican primary phase of the 2020 Greenville County sheriff’s special election.

On Sunday, SLED spokesperson Tommy Crosby confirmed that the state agency was in fact investigating Hall.

“(A) a preliminary investigation is being conducted based on information recently provided to the agency,” said Crosby. “There are no specifications available at this stage.”

According to our sources, the referral in question included allegations of “multiple misconduct” involving Hall – most of them with respect to issues related to compensation at the sheriff’s office and several “side jobs” performed by the veteran officer.

Our sources also tell us that problems with these “parallel tasks” are a “common problem” in the office.

The Greenville sheriff’s office became vacant after the former sheriff’s conviction on October 25, 2019 Will Lewis for misconduct in office. Elected in 2016, Lewis was suspended from office in April 2018 after being indicted during the course of an SLED investigation.

To say that the race to replace Lewis was bitter would be an understatement …

Hall (above) finished third in this close contest with 17 percent of the vote – behind AT “Tommy” Smith and eventual winner of the primary GOP Hobart Lewis (who benefited from Hall’s endorsement during his decisive second round defeat over Smith).

A spokesman for Hall’s campaign did not immediately respond to our request for comment on the investigation.

Hall is a 26-year-old veteran in the Greenville County sheriff’s office. Born and raised in Greenville, he was a correctional officer before being hired as a deputy by the acting sheriff Johnny Mack Brown in 1994.

Hall was promoted to captain in 2017 after Will Lewis took office.

Stay tuned … we hope to provide our readers with additional information related to this investigation as it becomes available.
