Indiana inmate accused of attacking guards, stabbing one to death

One inmate was charged on Sunday with fatally stabbing a correction officer and wounding a second in a prison in Indiana, officials said.

The incident occurred around 2:40 pm local time at Indiana State Prison in Michigan City, about 35 miles west of South Bend, Indiana State Police said in a statement.

Both officers were taken to St. Anthony’s Hospital in Michigan City, where a police officer was pronounced dead on arrival, according to the police. The second policeman was in serious condition, the police said.

On Monday, the LaPorte County coroner’s office identified the police officer who was stabbed to death as 57-year-old Lieutenant Gene Lasco. No other details were immediately available.

An autopsy was scheduled for Wednesday morning.

Tymetri Campbell, 38, who is an inmate at the Indiana State Prison, faces several charges, including murder during the investigation, police said. No other details were immediately available.

Campbell is currently serving a 130-year sentence after pleading guilty to a shooting in 2002 that left three people dead, WISH-TV reported.

He sought to reverse his conviction in a 2007 appeal, apologizing for “being present at the time” of the deaths and said he “did not kill anyone,” according to the broadcaster. A judge dismissed the appeal, saying Campbell’s statement “did not recognize responsibility,” the station reported.

Indiana State Prison is a maximum security facility that houses some 2,300 inmates, according to its website.
