An Indian was stabbed to death by his own rooster after attaching a 7-inch knife to his leg for an illegal cockfight, police said on Sunday.
Thangulla Satish, 45, was stabbed in the groin last week when the bird he had just set up for the fight vibrated in panic, according to police in the village of Lothunur, in the state of Telangana.
“Satish was hit by a cock knife in the groin and started to bleed a lot,” said police inspector B. Jeevan on Sunday, revealing that the victim died en route to a local hospital.
The police are now looking for more than a dozen other people involved in organizing the deadly cockfight, warning that they could face up to two years in prison if found guilty.
The rooster survived, with pictures of him tied with a rope and pecking grains at the police station went viral locally on social media.
“We may need to present it to the court,” said Jeevan.
In fights – banned in India in 1960 – two birds with a knife or blade fight until one dies or runs away.
Despite the national ban, they remain common in the southern Indian states of Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, often under the watchful eye of powerful local politicians with lucrative bets.
