India: small explosion near the Israeli embassy in New Delhi

New Delhi police said an “improvised device of very low intensity” went off at about 5 pm local time (6:30 am Eastern time) in the city center. No injuries were reported.

Israel is currently treating the explosion as a terrorist event, an official from the country’s foreign ministry told CNN. The official said it was too early to say with certainty whether the embassy was the target, but “this is one of the directions of the investigation at this stage”.

A spokesman for the Israeli Foreign Ministry said earlier that there were no casualties in the explosion and that there was no damage to the building.

Delhi police said the windows of three vehicles were the only things damaged in the explosion, adding that in the “initial impressions” the explosion was a “mischievous attempt to create a sensation”.

India’s foreign minister, S. Jaishankar, said he spoke to Israel’s foreign minister, Gabi Ashkenazi, and said the explosion was being taken very seriously.

“We guarantee him full protection for the Israeli embassy and diplomats. The matter is under investigation and no effort will be spared to find the culprits,” said Jaishankar in a tweet.

Friday marks the 29th anniversary of the establishment of full diplomatic relations between Israel and India.
