The five Indian players – Rohit Sharma, Rishabh Pant, Shubman Gill, Prithvi Shaw and Navdeep Saini – who are at the center of an alleged breach of Cricket Australia’s biosafety protocols, are expected to play in the third test that starts Thursday at Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), despite an ongoing investigation by BCCI.
The five players, who were placed in isolation after the Australian and Indian cricket committees launched an investigation into a video showing them sitting at a restaurant in Melbourne on Friday, were asked to train separately from the rest of the team and it might be possible for them to travel on Monday separately from the squad.
According to a report by the Sydney Morning Herald (SMH), the Cricket Control Council in India must take a “pragmatic approach” if it finds that the quintet has violated biosafety protocols. Cricket Australia cannot sanction such players, even if it is found that its rules have been violated, since the quintet is not of its employees, said the SMH report.
On Sunday, the Indian side boarded two buses to the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) for a gym session after the training session was canceled due to rain.
Gill boarded a team bus to return to the hotel with several other members of the group after the training, but a spokesman on the Indian side said the social distance requirements had been met, the report said.
According to the publication, Friday’s incident was not the first time that Indian players have apparently violated biosafety protocols.
Indian captain Virat Kohli and versatile player Hardik Pandya were also photographed in a store in Sydney in early December, during the white-ball leg of the tour.
There were emerging reports of Team India’s reluctance to play the fourth and final Test of the series underway in Brisbane due to the stricter biosafety protocols in Queensland.
However, members of the Queensland government have stated that the Indian team should not enter the state unless it is willing to coordinate with the protocols that have been established.
The ongoing four-game series is tied 1-1 with Australia winning the first test in Adelaide, while India recording a victory in the second in Melbourne.
