COLOMBIA, SC (WIS) – South Carolina health professionals are currently fighting two battles at the same time.
“We are seeing a lot more sick people and this is really putting that burden and pressure on our health care system,” said DHEC’s Acting Director of Public Health, Dr. Brannon Traxler.
As cases continue to rise and hospitalizations increase in South Carolina, nurses and doctors are now working twice as hard trying to vaccinate their employees while still saving lives.
“Certainly, if there were fewer people getting sick because of COVID-19 and needing to be hospitalized and receiving care, there would be more energy and attention that could be focused on vaccination,” said Traxler.
Traxler also pointed out staffing as a possible factor in delaying the vaccine’s release in the state.
“This, in turn, draws personnel and resources from those entities that can focus on vaccination,” said Traxler.
DHEC health leaders urge Southern Carolinians to take this virus seriously so that the focus can shift to the distribution of the vaccine.
“The best way to recruit vaccine teams is to do our part to stop transmission so that we can lift that burden from facilities and healthcare providers,” said Traxler.
