Inauguration increases sales of Justin Timberlake / Ant Clemons Duet

The best seller on January 20 of the two shows was “Better Days” by Clemons and Timberlake, which sold 13,000 downloads that day – a 15.351% gain compared to the insignificant amount it sold on January 19. The song was released in December, but has not yet reached a chart Advertising panel score. This is likely to change next week, as the new charts (dated January 30, reflecting sales and streaming data for the week ending January 21) are compiled and announced.

The next biggest seller for the two shows was McGraw and Hubbard’s “Undivided”, which sold 8,500 copies on January 20 (2,272% from just under 500 sales on January 19). The song debuted in a series of Advertising panel stops (dated 23 January), including Country Airplay at No. 19.

Black Pumas had the third best-selling song of the day, with “Colors” selling 4,000 – 11,415% more than an insignificant number on January 19. The song was nominated for the record of the year at the next Grammy Awards and reached No. 1 in Advertising panelAlternative Adult Airplay Chart a year ago (chart dated February 15, 2020).

Other notable sellers on the two shows include Foo Fighters ‘”Times Like This” (3,000; 8,716% increase), Withers’ “Lovely Day” (2,500; 1,897% increase), New Radicals “You Get What You Give” (1,500; up to 262%), Katy Perry’s “Firework” (1,000; up to 2,292%), and Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee “Despacito”, with Justin Bieber (1,000; up to 1,894%). (The latter was sung in part by Fonsi, without Daddy Yankee and Bieber, during DJ Cassidy’s Pass the Mic segment on Celebrating America Special.)

“You Get What You Give” had already started to increase sales in the days leading up to the show, selling almost 1,000 on January 18 and January 19 together, thanks to the buzz generated by the news of the act meeting specifically for the inauguration. On a normal day, the song sells an insignificant number. The track was released in 1998 and peaked at No. 36 on the Billboard Hot 100 and spent six weeks at No. 1 on the Adult Alternative Airplay chart in 1999.

News of any significant streaming gains for the songs performed will be reported in the coming days.
