Joel Farabee is a very reserved young man in his 20s who never takes much credit or talks about himself. Phillies’ second baseman, Chase Utley, was Farabee’s favorite athlete growing up. Utley, popularly known as “The Man” in these parts, had a mindset to make everything out, put your head on the ground and work. Farabee also has that quiet and unobtrusive direction, despite being a first-round talent in the 2018 draft.
Those who know Farabee better don’t mind talking about his talents for him. There was a lot to talk about when Farabee became an NHL candidate. John Wroblewski, one of his coaches at USNTDP, described Farabee’s game as “noisy” and “electric”. Ron Hextall, the former general manager of the Flyers who cast Farabee, called the disappointment in his game “excellent”.
Farabee left the United States national team development program and was singled out as a multifaceted top scorer with a strategic kick. By getting a hat-trick in the Flyers’ 4-3 victory in Sunday night’s victory over the Islanders, Farabee had his best performance at the NHL level, scoring two of his records on impressive triggers. He became the second youngest Flyer to register a hat trick. Only Eric Lindros achieved this when he was younger.
Of course, however, Farabee did not blow his own horn after the game. In fact, he praised his team’s netminders Brian Elliott and Carter Hart.
“I think it’s very good for me to have Moose and Hartsy as our goalkeepers,” said Farabee. “They are so good in practice, they really challenge us. Tonight, it just happened to help me.”
Modestly placed by the 20 year old.
Farabee, who skyrocketed to the Flyers, playing 52 games as a 19-year-old rookie last year, gained muscle in the off-season and has already shown his growth in 10 games in 2020-21. After scoring eight goals and 21 points last season, Farabee has five goals and eight points earlier this season. Your secondary score provides a formidable layer of depth for the Flyers’ attacking group.
“Joel is a young man who really wants to learn and develop his game,” said Flyers coach Alain Vigneault on Sunday. “He works extremely hard.”
When there is a four-point game at the start of the season and a hat-trick at game 10, the advantage is evident. Kevin Hayes, seated next to Farabee in his post-game media availability on Sunday, was asked whether he expected the first NHL hat-trick of his career to happen so soon.
“I thought it would be sooner, honestly. It took a little too long,” said Hayes. “But no, I’m happy for him, he works hard in practice and it is well deserved. Good job, buddy.”
Hayes then punched Farabee, who humbly replied, “Thanks, Kevin.”
