Austin, Texas – A small group of armed protesters met in Austin on Saturday, just days before President-elect Joe Biden took office, as seen in photos released by Getty Images.
Supporters of President Trump are gathering in state capitol buildings across the country over the weekend to protest the results of the presidential election and the inauguration of Biden, scheduled for Wednesday.
Texas State Capitol and Capitol Grounds are currently closed “as a precaution” for several days before the opening event, as announced Friday by the Texas Department of Public Security.
The closure of the Capitol will last from Saturday, January 15, to Wednesday, January 20.
The Texas DPS said it is aware of the armed protests planned on the Capitol this week and of “violent extremists who may try to exploit events protected by the constitution to carry out criminal acts”.
Additional DPS personnel and other resources will be stationed at the Capitol and the FBI and the Austin police will also be helping to respond.
Anyone who witnesses any suspicious activity online or in public should contact the FBI, Austin police or DPS at www.iWatchtx.org.
