Illinois launches 2 more mass vaccination sites, including 1 in Des Plaines – NBC Chicago

Illinois will soon launch two new mass vaccination sites, including one in Des Plaines, officials announced on Wednesday.

The state-supported sites are due to launch on Thursday in Des Plaines and Quincy, bringing the total number of mass vaccination sites in Illinois to 18. The Des Plaines site, located in an old K-Mart in 1155 E. Oakton St., marks the fourth such site in Cook County alone and will be what county officials say is the first large-scale facility to administer the Johnson & Johnson vaccine in Illinois.

“The COVID-19 vaccine site in Des Plaines is our last step in vaccinating Cook County and our most vulnerable communities,” said Cook County Council President Toni Preckwinkle in a statement. “This new location, which is conveniently located for many residents of the northwestern suburbs, will be used in the coming months as we progress with our program and increase the supply of vaccines.”

According to Cook County, the Des Plaines site will open consultations on Thursday afternoon and begin vaccinating residents on Friday or Saturday, pending the vaccine doses. For more information on schedules and availability click here.

The launch will take place on the same day, consultations for the next United Center location will be open to certain qualified residents, with plans to start vaccination next week.

Both Des Plaines and Quincy units will offer nearly 4,000 combined doses a day when they are at full capacity, officials said.

“With our new operations in Des Plaines and Quincy, Illinois, we are now operating 18 state-supported mass vaccination sites, in addition to a network of more than 800 vaccination sites across the state, all trained on one goal: to vaccinate as many as many people as possible, as quickly as possible, ”said Governor JB Pritzker in a statement. “One in six Illinois residents has already received their first dose of the vaccine, and as the federal government increases deliveries to Illinois to more than 100,000 a day later this month, IDPH and our 97 local health departments are ready to face the moment. In the meantime, I encourage all Illinois residents to wear their masks and remain vigilant as we move to the other side of the COVID-19 pandemic. “

Pritzker also announced plans to activate members of the National Guard in Union, Johnson, Pope, Hardin, Alexander, Pulaski and Massac counties.

In addition, Chicago also plans to open “new mass vaccination sites in the coming months”.

According to Advocate Aurora Health, a mass vaccination site is being explored at Wrigley Field.

Chicago Department of Public Health commissioner Dr. Allison Arwady also said the department had studied hosting a mass vaccination site Soldier Field.

“We are fully ready to defend mass vaccination sites, but it is a vaccine,” she said last month.

Pritzker suggested the possibility of additional locations in Illinois as well.

When asked whether McCormick Place in Chicago could be a local future, Pritzker said that “the opportunity to look elsewhere is always open”.

The growing number of mass vaccination sites follows Illinois’ entry into Phase 1B Plus, which expanded eligibility for Phase 1B vaccinations to include people with certain high-risk medical conditions and comorbidities.

As the state expanded its Phase 1B, many counties, health departments and hospital systems – including Chicago and Cook County – said they would not join the rest of Illinois to increase eligibility, citing the low vaccine supply for those who already qualify. .

Previously in phase 1B of the previous iteration, residents aged 65 and over, as well as essential workers, are eligible to receive the vaccine.
