Bret BielemaWisconsin’s success helped the Illini to achieve their first commitment to the badger state in eight years.
Hartland (Wist.) Offensive Lineman Arrowhead Joey Okla committed to Illinois on Friday, giving Illinois its first engagement in the 2022 class. Illinois offered the 1.8m-tall, 285-pound offensive striker a week ago.
Illinois offensive line coach Bart Miller led Okla’s search for Illini, who also had an offer from Eastern Illinois Division-I.
Former linebacker / defender Illini Austin Roberts it was Wisconsin’s last prospect to sign with Illinois.
To quote:“Coach Bielema and the whole team really showed me how much they care about me and showed me that they really wanted me there,” said Okla to the Illini Inquirer. “I want to go to a place where I am loved. This is what really put you on the edge. They didn’t cheat me or anything. They went straight to the point and pulled the trigger immediately. It just shows the character that the team has towards me. It is something special. It’s been my dream since I was a kid. They didn’t hesitate, and it really showed a lot. “
Scouting report: Okla has an impressive junior film (see above). He is a powerful offensive attacker inside who pulls well and blocks effectively in space. He also played across the offensive line in high school and has the versatility to be a guard or pivot on the next level. Although he has no other offer from FBS at the moment, Okla fits the mold of “strong, smart and reliable” players that Bielema often talks about.
What does it mean: Bret Bielema did not take long to impact the Class of 2022, adding an offensive physical striker. While Okla doesn’t have a big list of offers yet, Bielema comes with some pretty big credibility in the selection and development of striker after his seven successful seasons in Wisconsin. Bielema placed great emphasis on the Midwest at the start of his pursuits in 2022, and he rolls the ball with a guy who can eventually help Illini get the ball rolling on the ground. This is a solid first step in class that Illinois probably hopes will help build momentum.
