IKEA is now in the business of building small houses. And luckily, for Gen Y furniture owners everywhere, you won’t need that disposable Allen key. It is already built.
The Swedish furniture company is experimenting with prefabricated houses through its Ikea Tiny Home Project, selling 18 square meter residences on flat trailers.
The small house venture is a partnership with Vox Creative and the construction company RV Escape.
Currently, the only model available is the IKEA version of Escape’s Boho XL Wide model, which starts at $ 47,550. There are about 368 POÄNG chairs, for those who are counting.
The characteristics of the IKEA version – which seeks neutral tones, sustainability and that hygienic touch – include kitchen cabinets made from recycled plastic bottles, built-in furniture and a folding table, according to Lonely Planet. The XL has space for a queen size bed, as well as living areas, kitchen and bathroom, according to Escape’s promotional video.

“I started by listing all the space needs,” said Abbey Stark, senior interior design leader at IKEA, in a promotional video. “Like, how do you design around a well with wheels and the mechanics of the house? I wanted to purchase renewable, reusable and recycled materials, when possible, to make the space functional and beautiful. “
Tiny houses are in fashion among the environmentally conscious minimalist types, and have even managed to stay in vogue during the pandemic, when the last thing anyone wants is a smaller space.
But with advantages, including the trailer bed, compostable bathroom and solar panels, IKEA’s small home has the appeal to work anywhere that many sought out during the pandemic.
