IKEA confirms that it has produced simulated PS5 and Xbox Series X consoles

IKEA has confirmed that the images circulating, featuring a cardboard PlayStation 5 and an Xbox Series X / S, are real and were taken from an Illinois location.

The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X / S have been in high demand since their respective releases, potentially needing new ways to incorporate next generation consoles into homes. To that end, at least one branch of the home furniture store, IKEA, is offering useful models.

What started out as a Reddit rumor has now been confirmed. IKEA employees in Schaumberg, Illinois, built cardboard cutouts from the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X to better help people decide what kind of entertainment center they wanted. When the user TomaccoTastesLikeGma posted the photos for the first time, some suspected that the images were part of a joke. However, IKEA recently confirmed to ComicBook.com that the images are authentic.

“Our coworkers are always looking for creative ways to help our customers with storage solutions,” said an IKEA spokesman. “We can confirm that the images circulating online are from our IKEA Schaumburg store.” The spokesman added that the workers came up with the idea on their own. They wanted to be able to show how the new game consoles would fit into IKEA storage units. So, they built cardboard models, complete with measurements.

Designs and how they resembled the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X quickly gained attention on the internet. Reddit users expressed amusement at what was written on the side of the PS5 cardboard version. This model was adorned with the label, “Which IKEA media storage unit will be able to fit on my new oversized meme game console?”

Many in the gaming community have had trouble getting the newest consoles. The stock of the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 was limited at launch. In recent months, retailers have been able to offer more units sporadically. However, due to demand, retailers quickly sell out.

Despite the problems that some have had to find a new PS5 or X Series, the sales figures are still robust. Industry experts blame, at least partially, the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) for the limited number of consoles available. Both Microsoft and Sony have assured consumers that they will increase production in 2021.

Sales figures for the PlayStation 5 recently broke a historic record for a month of release. Sony and its PlayStation 4 maintained the previous record. Record sales figures continue to arrive, despite some reports that there are some places where consoles are not selling as well, including Sony’s home in Japan.
