If your old MacBook is experiencing battery problems, Apple can repair it for free

Battery life is very important when it comes to laptops and, even if you have an old one, expect it to last at least a few hours. So, if your MacBook is struggling to survive a cup of coffee, Apple can fix it for free.

Although not yet part of an official repair or replacement program, Apple agreed to replace batteries in 2016 and 2017 MacBook Pros that “had a problem with the battery not charging more than 1 percent”.

Apple says that the affected devices will also display “Recommended Service”, which you can check in the Battery menu in System Preferences or in the menu bar. These are the models eligible for a possible replacement battery:

  • MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2016, two Thunderbolt 3 ports)
  • MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2017, two Thunderbolt 3 ports)
  • MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2016, four 3-port Thunderbolt)
  • MacBook Pro (13 inch, 2017, four Thunderbolt 3 ports)
  • MacBook Pro (15 inch, 2016)
  • MacBook Pro (15 inch, 2017)

Apple first says to update macOS to macOS Big Sur 11.2.1 or later or the macOS Catalina 10.15.7 supplemental update before contacting customer support about a replacement.
