The researchers sought to discover how blood type influences the risk of heart attack, publishing their findings on January 23 in Arteriosclerosis, thrombosis and vascular biology, a newspaper of the American Heart Association (AHA). The study, which looked at more than 400,000 people, found that people with blood types A or B had a combined 8% higher risk of heart attack than those with blood type O.
A similar study of more than 1.36 million people was done by the European Society of Cardiology in 2017. This previous study produced consistent results, with researchers determining that those with a blood type did not experience a 9 percent increased risk of events coronary and cardiovascular diseases, particularly heart attacks. When the researchers in the 2021 study compared blood types A and B with blood type O, they found a significant increase in the risk of heart attack with blood type B.
