Idris Elba leads the way in a new trailer for his upcoming Netflix movie, Concrete Cowboy.
The film, which is based on the Ghetto Cowboy novel by G. Neri, features Elba as Harp, a father who takes on his 15-year-old son Cole (Caleb McLaughlin) after being expelled from school in Detroit.
“Harp finds solace in the rehabilitation of downtown cowboys’ horses at Fletcher Street Stables, a real-life black urban riding community that has offered a safe haven for neighborhood residents for over 100 years,” Netflix said in a synopsis. .

He continued: ‘Torn between his growing respect for his father’s community and his resurgent friendship with his cousin Smush (Jharrel Jerome), Cole begins to prioritize his life while the stables themselves are threatened by invasive gentrification.’
The film was shown last September at the Toronto International Film Festival, where Elba told Variety that the timing was perfect for bringing the story about black cowboy culture to the cinema screen.
“It seems very fitting to be able to tell a part of the story that has definitely been buried,” said Elba, “and, in the case of Concrete Cowboy, that story is now.”
Elba opened up about the historical value of the material that he and director Ricky Staub sought to preserve with the film, referring to the Fletcher Stables in the face of potential gentrification.
