ICloud encoding error blocks Rachel True on a Boolean flag

An apparent flaw in iCloud’s designs appears to have prevented a user from accessing his account on the iCloud website, due to the interpretation of his surname as “True”.

Author Rachel True shared on Twitter that she is getting an error when trying to sign in to iCloud.

REPORTED ERROR TITLE: Type error: it is not possible to set the value ‘true’ for the property ‘lastName

It looks like iCloud is interpreting your surname True as a Boolean flag, so we were unable to login. She noticed that she was blocked for more than 6 months. She later said she spent hours on the phone with Apple support about the problem, with no resolution.

It looks like a resolution may come soon, however. She later shared that she hopes to hear from Apple earlier this week. 1 reply joked that his quickest solution would be to get married and use his spouse’s name, but that “Mr. / Mrs. ‘Null’ ”would probably repeat the problem.

ICloud is an integral part of the iOS and macOS experience, so when it can’t be used, it affects the overall operations of the devices people depend on. We later learned that only the purchasing power of the Apple ID has been blocked, as the iCloud aspect is separate from the Apple ID.
