With teams almost full of The voice In season 20, coaches worked hard on Monday to recruit the most important final contestants. Kelly Clarkson and Nick Jonas, in particular, created new audiovisual ways to play dirty and messy, and the series’ usual hilarity ensued – especially when their PowerPoint presentations backfired spectacularly.
First, when Kelly hoped to win over 70s-style American warbler Jordan Matthew Young, whose cover of Keith Whitley’s “I’m No Stranger to the Rain” clearly made it look like Team Blake material, she really tried to use the Blake Shelton’s own fiancee, Gwen Stefani, against him. Unfortunately for Kelly, her Adobe Premiere skills would need some work, as her disjointed footage of Gwen apparently campaigning for Team Kelly failed to convince Jordan. (I suppose the poorly edited bumps between Gwen’s many different hair styles and shiny outfits were the big tip here.) Interestingly, Jordan seemed more influenced by pop singing coach Nick Jonas’s argument that choosing to join Team Jonas would be a “disturbing” movement. But in the end, Blake’s comparison of Jordan with Eric Church sealed the deal and nothing was interrupted. For the first time on the show, Blake was honest and to the point, and it was worth it.
But Nick did not fail to be truly disturbing, later fighting for the only competitor of four chairs of the night, the sophisticated singer Anna Grace, of 20 years, with a slideshow of damnable memes – including one depicting Blake manipulating an adorable puppy of yellow laboratory with the capital letters totally white “CACHORRO DE PACHORRO”. Nick explained: “I discovered memes in this one, because the internet doesn’t lie!”
“Now, I don’t hate dogs. I want everyone at home to know that I don’t hate puppies, ”said Blake. “It turns out that I strangled that particular puppy at that time.” The out-of-context image was actually a screenshot of Nick’s first pass at The voice, in season 18, when Blake tried to recruit the 16-year-old prodigy, Tate Brusa, holding that small packet of cream colored fluff, whose name was Snowflake, and threatening: “If you don’t choose me as your trainer, this dog will come back straight to the animal shelter! “
Regular Voice viewers with steel trap memories will remember that Blake’s dirty tactic didn’t work at the time. (Tate joined Team Jonas, and hopefully Snowflake has finally found a home forever.) And this week, Nick’s meme strategy also failed, with Anna happily joining Team Kelly without Kelly even having to show her one. Gwen’s error roll edited in an amateurish way. All of this contributed to a good TV, but honestly I’m not sure whether Jordan or Anna ensured that the coaches resorted to such desperate measures. Even Blake admitted that Jordan was “shaky” at first, and Anna’s cover of Billie Eilish’s “My Future” was emotionally empty. If this is the kind of mischief that the coaches are doing now, the last episode of the Blind Auditions of the 20th season next Monday is going to have Crazy.
In the meantime, these were the other tests of success this week:
Savanna Woods, 26: “Zombie”
This nomadic singer and songwriter sees herself as a kind of rock belter, but I don’t think she had a voice or personality big enough to do that. Savanna is not Dolores O’Riordan – or Miley Cyrus, to tell the truth. Even the coaches described her as “carefree”. It presented an attractive rasp, but more suitable for less aggressive and less operatic powerful ballads. Kelly’s hand hovered undecided over the red button during most of Savanna’s presentation, and later she explained why: “After she grew up, I wanted to hear what it would sound like when she came back and got small again.”
Who turned?: Nick and, eventually, Kelly.
Result: Kelly team. Nick played the Thunderstorm Artis card, which was not a bad strategy. (Thunderstorm was the artistic finalist for Team Jonas in season 18, and he should have won that season.) But Kelly calling Savanna “cool as hell” and describing her as “if Patty Griffin and Nirvana had a baby” was a even more effective movement.
Rachel Mac, 15: “Let Him Fly”
Rachel is a young country singer and the daughter of a worship leader, but she also graduated in theater and marching band. And on top of that, his voice was unexpectedly moving tonight. has layers for this girl! I have a feeling that she could sing about anything and it would be interesting.
Who turned? Just Nick.
Result: Team Jonas, obviously. But it was clear that Rachel had same hoped to join Team Blake. She was mostly excited just to To know Blake, showing off her own PowerPoint presentation of a Blake Shelton report that she had done in elementary school. I felt sorry for Nick because he seemed like an afterthought to his own team member. (It is it might have been time to bring up that “PUPPY DOG” meme, but it probably wouldn’t have worked.) I think Rachel and Nick could connect because of their origins in the theater – he was in Smash, after all! – but Blake vowed to try to rob Rachel if he had the chance.
Lindsay Joan, 22: “Nightmare”
Another kid in the musical theater – the one who grew up to do a national tour with a Broadway company from Fancy Boots – Lindsay tore a very dramatic, maybe also dramatic, version of a Halsey hit. She made “Nightmare” sound like a damn Melissa Manchester song. Lindsay later admitted that she had never been more nervous in her life, which may have explained her overzealous attack. But at least she has fully committed herself and commanded attention, instead of being shy under pressure.
Who turned? Nick and Blake. Kelly quickly regretted not having turned, especially when she found out that Lindsay had done her own 4th grade Kelly Clarkson schoolwork. (Lindsay got B-plus, which is a slightly higher grade than I would give her at the audition.)
Result: Team Jonas. “The important thing in the future will be a combination of finding that confidence in yourself and in your voice,” said Nick. “There are so many things that we could do with the song selection, and I want to have a chance to do that.”
Rio Doyle, 16: “When We Were Young”
This jazz singer’s vibrato was totally out of control, which is why Nick didn’t turn around, and Kelly was startled by the way Rio “swallowed the words”. But she looked surprisingly mature for her age, with the kind of natural talent with which John could do wonders. “Being 16 and playing an Adele song is always a bold and risky move, and I thought, ‘This is the type of artist I want on my team,'” he explained.

Zania Alaké, 34: “Sweet Love”
This single mom and banker from Detroit during the day / lead singer of the funk band at night was so material from Team Legend, with her silky Anita Baker cover, that I was surprised that any other coach would even bother to resort. I wasn’t that impressed with the limited vocal range of this Kansas small town girl, but I love some Thompson twins, and I was much impressed with the effectiveness with which she took advantage of the melancholy feeling of the hit new wave and made her own music. “The fact that you chose to make that song and play it that way shows your writing side. Being able to pick up a song and figure out how to invert it completely like that, it’s really cool, ”blake marveled.
