I killed a dancing bear in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, I felt awful and would do it again

Kotaku game diaryKotaku game diaryThe last thoughts of a Kotaku employee about a game we’re playing.

Lurking in the fields and forests of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla they are immensely powerful beasts. The type of animal that people tell stories about. Dangerous and murderous monsters that only a strong, brave and perhaps foolish warrior could … Oh, wait, never mind. He got stuck on the floor like an idiot.

Since ending the main story of Valhalla and writing the review, I spent my time in the game running and completing side missions and collecting hidden equipment. Effectively, I’m just crossing out a few things from a big checklist, but it’s a beautiful list and I’m having fun doing it. I recently decided to start eliminating the legendary animals that dot the map. My target last night was a big bear, the Beast of the Hills. According to a guide, is a little tricky to find, since the bear only appears during the day in its underground hiding place. He also mentions having to find some blood and track it back to the lair.

Or you can do what I did. I simply traveled fast near the place, ran towards it and, in the middle of a fight with some random enemies, I found the bear stuck on the floor doing a strange dance move.

I’m not sure what happened. At the time, I didn’t even realize I was looking at the legendary Beast of the Hills. I assumed it was just a random bear that was walking around, got stuck and was now going to be killed in an unworthy way. It was only after I started attacking that I realized that I was really the bear of the legend. Many questions came to mind. How did you get here? Why were you dancing? And should I at least kill the poor creature while she shakes off what her mama bear gave her?

Usually, legendary animals are dangerous enemies that can easily kill the unprepared, or even hardened warriors who make some mistakes. Therefore, being able to avoid an easy death would be a good way to save time and effort.

But that was it right? It didn’t seem right. I decided to hit him with my ax a few times to see if I could free him, and at that point we could have an adequate fight. After a few ginger chops, he let go of his strange location on the ground and went on all fours like a normal giant bear should. I waited for your attack, but none came. A few moments passed. I knocked again, thinking I might need some encouragement for aggro after being stuck in space-time for who knows how long. But even a generous amount of strokes failed to drive the magnificent beast into violence. So I shot him down where he was.

Not my most proud photo …

I felt bad, but also worried that if I didn’t kill him, he might be stuck somewhere else and I would never be able to find him again. You know what bears are like. So, after laboriously completing all the other checklists in this obscenely long game, I would be left with a single legendary animal in the world, making it officially impossible 100% Valhalla. (Something that technically I will never do because fishing in this game sucks, but focus on the principle here.)

Strangely, killing him yielded nothing: no reward or “mission complete” Appear. Uh oh! Did I just break the game? Was that karmic justice? I decided to go to the bear’s lair, as it was still marked on the map. Perhaps the bear would resurface, angry at the first death. But instead, as soon as I entered the underground area, the game gave me the kill, some rewards, and wiped it off the map.

A sad death for such a noble creature. I suppose he died as he lived, dancing on the hills. I don’t regret what I did, but I feel a little bad. Sometimes I wonder … am I the real monster? The real legendary beast? Anyway, something to chew on while I’m going to kill the rest of those hairy bastards.
