Huwalt’s gold takes Auburn to the South Carolina Invitational

COLUMBIA, SC—Auburnous second-year pitcher Maura Huwalt had the best performance of his high school career, not once, but twice, including his first high school victory on the South Carolina Invitational Saturday. Huwalt won the women’s shot put and finished seventh in the shot put with great personal records in both events. The encounter saw Auburn athletes collect 27 combined college or career efforts.

The South Park, Pennsylvania native won the shot placed on his fourth throw with a 16.41m / 53-10.25 shot, almost three feet further than his previous PR entering the match. Huwalt’s brand moved it to the 11th position nationally and the first in the Southeast Conference. At the end of the day, Huwalt made 18.90 m / 62-0.25 in the shot put, overcoming the best of his career by almost four feet.

Huwalt was one of several tiger pitchers with strong performances and personal records at the South Carolina Invitational. All Americans Madi Malone was the second placed in the female weight (21.41m / 70-3), while the second year Jocelynn Budwig PR’ed in the shot put and finished fifth with a best shot of 15.96 / 52-4.5

Second year Kyle Brown, having a tremendous indoor season, marked his third consecutive encounter with a PR in the men’s weightlifting. On Saturday he crossed the 21 meter mark for the first time, finishing third with 21.04m / 69-0.5, good for the eighth best mark in the country.

In the sprints, Auburn had five individuals advancing to the finals, including two in each men’s and women’s 60m race. Junior Dante Brown ranked fifth in the 60 men at 6.75, while sprinter All-SEC Christopher Grant, making his season debut, was sixth at 6.78. On the female side, freshman Niya Benton-Andrews (7.58) was the seventh while Tylar Colbert it was the eighth in a PR time of 7.64. transfer Oquendo Bernard competing in an Auburn uniform for the first time was eighth in the 60m hurdles men (8.33).

Junior Dontavious Hill continued his consistent work in the indoor season with his second 2.15m / 7-0.5 mark of the season to finish second. Hill posted a gold medal and two silvers at three events in 2021. Júnior Caroline Lawrence and freshman teammates Kamiya Dendy and Allison Tanner all completed 1.66 m / 5-5.25 in the female high jump to finish third, fourth and fifth, respectively, in errors.

James Courson was the third in the male pole vault, clearing 5.01m / 16-5.25, while the freshman Matthew Asplund cleared the same height for a personal record, but was the fifth based on errors.

The Tigers will compete at the same venue next week at the USC Open, February 6.
