The people of Húsavik, Iceland, woke up today and decided to go ahead, man. After having your city featured on Netflix’s Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga, the humble inhabitants of the city launched their own DIY Oscars campaign with the aim of helping the song “Húsavik” win the Oscar. The video follows a Húsavík man named… wait… Óskar Óskarsson (played by Sigurður Illugason). He’s the only Oskar in town, you know, and he wants another one. The city even asked the elves for help! But can your efforts overcome the absolute anger of “the guy ‘Jaja Ding Dong’,” who has other ideas about a certain song in the film that he should win?

The campaign’s website shows how much music and film have meant to the people of this small town, where two-thirds of all jobs depend on tourism. “For that reason, the city was hit hard by the Covid-19 pandemic,” said a statement on the website. “But the launch of the Netflix film and the song ‘Húsavik’ lifted the spirit of the people of Húsavík. When we learned that music, which has become a kind of anthem for our people, had a chance of being nominated for an Oscar, we went into action ”. In fact, there is now an effort to create a temporary museum in Húsavik dedicated to the Eurovision Song Contest that the city hopes to open this summer. As the Icelandic musician Daði Freyr once told us, the lyrics to “Húsavik” don’t make a lot of grammatical sense, but I think we can all agree that this song that won an Oscar, yes.
