In Hunter Biden’s next revealing book, the president’s son describes how his relationship with his late brother’s widow was born out of despair.
After the funeral of his brother Beau, who died of brain cancer in 2015, Hunter said he started spending a lot of time at Hallie Biden’s house, to help with the children in Beau’s absence. He said he slept most nights in a Murphy bed in the office and took the kids to school in the morning.
But it wasn’t until Hunter finished a stint at Grace Grove rehab in Sedona, Arizona, that he and Hallie started a relationship, according to Hunter.
“Feeling physically and mentally clean, I called Hallie and asked if she could come to Arizona to pick me up. I wanted her to accompany me on the return trip,” wrote Hunter in “Beautiful Things.” “I didn’t trust myself to go home without backing off – without making a detour to the pit I fell on the way there.”

After the trip to Arizona in 2016, Hunter said the pair tried to keep their relationship a secret. “It didn’t last long,” wrote Hunter. He said his ex-wife Kathleen found text messages between the two on an iPad he left at home.
“It gave her the gift of justification: I was the patient sleeping with my brother’s wife. Everything exploded after that.”
Kathleen and Hunter separated in the months following Beau’s death, but did not formally divorce.

Hunter said he realized that the relationship with Hallie was “a giant miscalculation on both sides, errors of judgment born out of an exclusively tragic time”. Less than three months after moving in with Hallie, her and Beau’s children, he moved out. Shortly thereafter, he moved back in, only to move out two weeks later.
“We were both too involved in our own problems to be able to help each other,” wrote Hunter. “The life I led was the antithesis of the life my brother had given her,” he said, adding that he stayed away from the family while taking drugs.
Hunter said that he and Hallie were not close before Beau’s death. He said that Kathleen and Beau were close and had inside jokes, but he and Hallie didn’t know that.
“We didn’t have much in common, we didn’t even have much to talk about,” wrote Hunter. “She was not consumed by politics, she was not dedicated to the same subjects as me. But she is incredibly attractive.”
