Hume: Liberals calling for repression of freedom of expression ‘don’t understand the concept’

Fox News senior political analyst Brit Hume warned on Tuesday that those on the left who call for greater regulation of speech do not understand the concept of the First Amendment or the market for ideas.

Hume told Tucker Carlson Tonight that the most distressing part of the “repressions” raised by Big Tech and Democrats is that media personalities and journalists supported them.

BRIT HUME: What is most distressing to me … is the extent to which the journalists themselves are participating … it surprises me, frankly.

It is alarming and it suggests to me that people who are asking for this type of thing do not really understand the basis of our concept of freedom of expression, which is that people are better informed by hearing a wide range of voices and tolerating them, and that the answer to the questionable speech is not censorship.

RUPERT MURDOCH CONDEMNS “HORROR ORTHODOXY” TO ATTEMPT TO SUPPRESS FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION

Thomas Jefferson, in fact, expressed this very well many years ago when he said the following: “Well here,” he said, “we are not afraid to follow the truth wherever it may lead, nor to tolerate any error, as long as the reason is left free to fight it. ”

That is the concept, open forums, freedom of expression, if you think the speech is questionable, respond with something better.

Later, in 1927, there was a famous case called Whitney v. California in which [Supreme Court] Justice [Louis] Brandeis had a famous passage and is talking about the same subject and said: “If there was time to expose, through discussion, the falsehoods and fallacies to avoid evil through the education process, the remedy to be applied is more speech, not silence. forced. ”

What we are hearing and seeing now are the journalists themselves trying to shut down other organizations and news channels, and I find that surprising and alarming.
