Hubert Davis as new UNC head coach

CHAPEL HILL, NC — Three hours after being announced as the new head coach of the North Carolina basketball program on Monday, Hubert Davis gave his first interview in family territory. Davis joined the College GameDay program, meeting with some of the team members with whom he worked for seven years on ESPN, and the comfort was immediately evident.

Amid jokes, personal jokes and repeated laughter, Davis answered pertinent questions about his Tar Heel story, his path to this job, what it means for him to take over UNC and how he plans to put his mark on the program.

After a distinguished career at UNC and then 12 years in the NBA, Davis worked as an analyst at ESPN, before Roy Williams recruited him to the Carolina coaching staff. Davis has spent the past nine seasons as an assistant coach on the Williams team with responsibilities including recruiting, bank coach, scouts and led the UNC JV team.
