Howard Liebengood, the Capitol Police officer who responded to the attack, died

A Capitol Police officer died days after responding to Wednesday’s attack on the building, Capitol Police confirmed on Sunday to CBS News. Capitol police said Officer Howard Liebengood died while on duty.

Capitol police said in a statement that Liebengood, 51, was on the Senate side. He has worked for the Capitol police department since April 2005. The police union president said it was a “tragic day”.

“We are suffering from the death of Officer Liebengood. Each Capitol officer puts the safety of others before their own safety and Officer Liebengood was an example of the selfless service that is the trademark of the USCP,” said the president of the police union. Capitol Building, Gus Papathanasiou, in a statement.

Liebengood’s father, Howard Liebengood Sr, served as the Senate’s arms sergeant from 1981 to 1983.

Other tributes poured out on Sunday, including from the Mayor Nancy Pelosi, Senator Tim Kaine and former secretary of state John Kerry.

The White House issued a proclamation lowering the flag to half the team on Sunday, in honor of Liebengood and Capitol Officer Brian Sicknick, who died Thursday as a result of injuries sustained on the Capitol.

A crowd of Trump supporters stormed the Capitol on Wednesday, eventually reaching the House and Senate. One of the protesters was shot and killed by the Capitol police, and three other protesters died as a result of medical emergencies, the police said.
