How to use Street View in split screen on Google Maps

The Google Maps app now has a split-screen street view option on Android. Enabling it allows you to use Street View and the map simultaneously, which makes finding and navigating to a destination – or virtually exploring the surrounding area– much easier than just relying on the map or Street View.

Split View Street View is available to all users of Google Maps version 10.59.1 or higher. You can download the application and check for new updates through the Google app store.

How to enable Street View in split screen on Google Maps

  1. Open Google Maps on your Android device and search for your destination.
  2. Touch the view mode menu (it’s the circle button with the stacked squares) and select “Street view.”
  3. Touch anywhere on the map to zoom out to Street View. It will open at the top of the screen in portrait mode or on the left shelf of the screen in landscape mode.

While in split view, you can tap and drag in the Street View window or on the map to move around the area. Any moves will affect both views. You can touch the “Expand” in the bottom right corner of the Street View window to extend it to the full screen and hide the map. Touch the button again to return to split screen mode.

When you find your destination and are ready to go, there are other recent resources that can help you get there safely. For those hooves , the application can show you where you are going with your AR walking navigation. You can also try the detailed voice guidance option so you don’t have to look at your phone while walking – which is it is also useful for visually impaired users. And if you’re driving, make sure you connect your favorite music app to Google Maps then you can control your music with with your voice without switching apps.
