How to label Bluetooth devices on iPhone and iPad

IOS 14.4 has arrived for all users and one of the new features is the option to classify your Bluetooth accessories as a specific type of device. Read the reason and how to label Bluetooth devices on iPhone and iPad as speakers, headphones, hearing aids and car stereo.

In addition to the inherent value that some will find in Bluetooth devices properly labeled on the iPhone and iPad, Apple says the new feature will do two main things.

First, correctly identifying your devices will provide enhanced audio notifications. Second, Apple notes “Specifying the type of device can ensure that measurements of the headset’s audio level are accurate.”

With iOS 14.4, there are five categories for labeling your Bluetooth devices:

  • Car Stereo
  • Earphone
  • Hearing aid
  • Speaker
  • From others

How to label Bluetooth devices on iPhone and iPad

  1. Make sure you have upgraded your iPhone / iPad to iOS 14.4
  2. Direct the Settings> Bluetooth
  3. Touch ā€œIā€ icon near a connected Bluetooth device
  4. Touch Device type
  5. If it is not correct, choose a label

Since AirPods are already known by iOS as headsets, there is no option to change the Bluetooth label.
