Are you saying goodbye to WhatsApp and moving to Telegram? Wouldn’t it be great if you could take all of your chat and media messages with you? Well, it is possible to import individual WhatsApp chats directly to Telegram!

The backup and restore feature of WhatsApp is very limited. It doesn’t even work between Android and iPhone without a third-party tool. But Telegram has an import feature that allows you to transfer conversations from other messaging apps like WhatsApp, Line and KaKaoTalk via chat. Although it seems boring, it gets the job done. In this guide, we’ll focus on WhatsApp.

As soon as the chat is imported, messages will be displayed to both parties. Imported messages will be added to the bottom of the chat, but will have their original timestamp.

Just export the WhatsApp chat and import it into Telegram. That’s how it works on Android and iPhone.

Import WhatsApp chat history on Telegram for Android

Open the WhatsApp application and go to the conversation you want to export to Telegram.

Here, touch the three-dot menu icon located in the upper right corner.

Now, select the “More” button.

From here, choose the option “Export chat”.

WhatsApp will now ask if you want to export the chat with or without media. Exporting with media can be a few hundred MBs, depending on your chat. If you want to keep it light, choose the “No media” option.

On the sharing page, tap the “Telegram” application shortcut.

You will now see all of your conversations in the Telegram app. Here, choose the conversation you want to import the messages into.

In the pop-up message, tap the “Import” button.

The Telegram app will start importing your chat. Once you’re done, you’ll see the completion prompt. Here, tap the “Done” button.

The Telegram conversation will be updated with all WhatsApp data. It will also show the original WhatsApp timestamps.

Import WhatsApp chat history on Telegram for iPhone

The steps are a little different when it comes to the iPhone. Open the WhatsApp application on your iPhone and navigate to the chat you want to export to Telegram.

Select the contact on WhatsApp

Here, touch the name of the contact’s profile located at the top of the screen.

Scroll down and touch the “Export chat” option.

WhatsApp will ask if you want to export the chat with or without media. To keep the export light, choose the “No media” option.

In the sharing spreadsheet, choose the “Telegram” application.

Search and choose the contact you want to import the chat to.

In the pop-up message, confirm the action by selecting the “Import” option.

Telegram will now import the chat. Once the process is complete, tap the “Done” button.

You will find WhatsApp messages in the Telegram chat, with their old timestamps.
