How to host the Valheim Multiplayer

To play Valheim online with a small group of friends, you won’t have to go much further to host a dedicated Valheim server.

  • Create your world (and pair it with a random or customized seed)
  • Go to the Start World tab, highlight the options for Start Server and Community Server
  • Fill in your server password and press start

Valheim Dedicated Servers

Valheim servers come with a password system by default, which means that there are no traditional public servers.

Instead, players need to find Valheim servers or create their own.

With that in mind, here’s how to host a dedicated Valheim server.

How to host a dedicated Valheim server

To create a Valheim online multiplayer server with friends, you will need to follow these steps:

  • Choose the machine on which you will host your dedicated Valheim server
  • Through Steam, find the dedicated Valheim server in your library (first you will have to activate the tools) and then install it
  • Find the folder where you installed the Valheim Dedicated Server (the default is: Program files (x86)> Steam> steamapps> common> Valheim Dedicated Server)
  • Go to line 7, where you will see a line starting with “start valheim_server”
  • Edit the following (if you haven’t already changed your information):
    • -name “My Server”
      • Add whatever you want your Valheim server to receive (don’t name it the same as your worldwide name and vice versa)
    • -port 2456
      • Change to the default port forwarding (can be found in the router’s settings)
    • -world “dedicated”
      • Add whatever you want your Valheim world to have (don’t name it the same as your world name and vice versa)
    • – password “Secret”
      • Add whatever you want to be the password for the Valheim server. If you want a public server open to everyone, you can leave this field blank
  • Load your server, turn on Valheim and start playing!

Valheim dedicated server system requirements

There are no hard and fast rules for hosting a dedicated Valheim server according to your machine’s needs.

BEYOND: Valheim is a magical world full of surprises

There are, however, some recommendations, such as having a strong CPU to handle the constant load.

If you have a powerful PC, you will probably be able to run the dedicated Valheim server on it while playing the game. Remember that if you have a problem, the server will go down to everyone else.

Otherwise, you can run your dedicated Valheim server on a different PC, just make sure it stays up and running so that the server stays open.
