Since LastPass announced that it was adjusting its free tier to allow only a single device category – mobile or computer – there has been a lot of interest in finding alternatives among LastPass users. Fortunately, after finding an alternative, it is very easy to extract your data from LastPass and send it to another password manager.
The following are instructions on how to download your data from LastPass and where to find instructions from several popular password managers that will help you send that data to your services.
Export your LastPass data
LastPass allows you to export your data as a CSV or XML file. If you are planning to move this data to another service, CSV is the best choice. Since CSV stands for comma-separated values and is a plain text file, it is a good idea not to cling to it after moving your data to another password manager – or putting that file in a safe place where it can’t be read easily by someone else.
Before you begin, you should be aware that the best (and really only way) to export your data from LastPass is from the browser extension on a desktop or laptop computer. (You can technically do this on the LastPass website, but, as I will explain, it is more problematic than it is worth.) If you have not downloaded the extension for your browser (links are at the bottom of the LastPass page), go ahead .
Prepare?
- Click on the extension icon and proceed to “Account Options”> “Advanced”> “Export”> “CSV LastPass File”
- You will be asked to enter your master password to continue. If you think you may be interrupted at some point and are working in a safe place (such as a home office), feel free to ask that you do not apply again for up to 24 hours.

That’s it! LastPass will immediately download your CSV file.
If you really, same don’t want to install the browser extension, see how you can get your information on the LastPass website ”
- Go to LastPass.com and log into your account.
- Click on “Advanced Options” on the left menu.
- Click “Export” and enter your master password, if prompted.
- If your experience is similar to mine, you should see a comma-delimited list of all your passwords on a separate web page. You can select the entire content of the page by accessing the top menu and selecting “Edit”> “Select all”. You can then copy the data and paste it on a text page using a word processor or other text application.
After downloading your information, you can send it to the password manager of your choice. There are several, free or not, and we have included a sample below, along with their starting prices (if any) and links to instructions on how to import your data. But first, we are assuming that you will eventually want to delete your LastPass passwords. See how.
Delete your LastPass account
After choosing your new password manager (and we have great success in having you live with it for at least a week or more first), you can delete your LastPass account and data.

- Click the red “Delete” button.
- Where you go from here depends on whether you remember your master password. If you remember, click “Yes”. You will have one last chance to download your data, you will be asked to enter your master password and why you are deleting your account. Then, click Delete.

- If you don’t remember your master password, click “No.” You will have the chance to download your data and request your email address. You will receive an email with a link that will allow you to delete the account.
In any case, remember there is no rush to delete your account. Make sure you have a usable copy of your passwords and a new password manager that satisfies you first.
