How to copy your Apple photos to Google Photos

Apple quietly launched a tool that allows you to copy all images stored in Apple Photos to Google Photos.

You may find this useful for a few reasons. It’s an easy way to move everything around if you’re switching to an Android phone, since it’s not possible to upload to Apple Photos from an Android phone. Like Apple Photos, Google Photos will create auto-highlighting video clips with music, but it will also automatically create collages, animations, add filters (which usually look really good), and more. Both services have their strengths and I use both as a way to create a backup of each other.

It is also useful if you want to switch from iCloud storage to Google One storage. Apple charges $ 0.99 / month for 50 GB, $ 2.99 / month for 200 GB or $ 9.99 / month for 2 TB of storage. Google’s plans are similarly priced, but allow you to share 100 GB with your family for $ 1.99 a month, while Apple offers only family sharing in its 200 GB and 2 TB plans. In addition, Google has a $ 49.99 / month 10 TB plan, if you have one much of data and I just want to keep everything there.

A warning: the transfer is not immediate. He said that my 117 GB library with more than 20,000 photos and more than 800 videos will take between three and seven days to move.

I will show you how to copy them now.

How to copy your photos from Apple Photos to Google Photos

Transfer from Apple Photos to Google Photos

  • First go to the Apple privacy website (privacy.apple.com/account) on your computer.
  • Log in with your Apple account.
  • Choose “Request to transfer a copy of your data”.
  • You’ll see a summary of the number of photos and videos stored on iCloud Photos and how much storage space they currently use.
  • Under “Choose where you want to transfer your photos to,” select “Google Photos”. It is the only option at the moment.
  • Check the boxes to transfer videos and photos.
  • Touch Continue.
  • Confirm that you are aware that your photos and videos will not be fully transferred if your Google One unit runs out of space by tapping “Continue” again.
  • Sign in with your Google Account and grant Apple access to your Google Photos library.
  • Choose “Confirm transfers”.

That’s it. You should see the photos appear in your Google account when the transfer is complete, after which you will also receive a confirmation email. Be patient: it can take several days, depending on the size of your library.
