Brissett, who started his career with the Patriots, was mentioned as a potential bridge option if New England looks to add a low-cost veteran while also using a high draft choice in a QB. But with Rivers’ retirement, the Colts may try to retain the 28-year-old, who has debuted in 30 games for the team in the past four seasons. Ryan Fitzpatrick and Tyrod Taylor also fit this mold.
If looking for a high-caliber replacement, the Colts can try to get Matthew Stafford out of Detroit or try to reunite coach Frank Reich with Carson Wentz, although his swollen contract with the Philadelphia Eagles in Wentz makes him a less likely candidate. Stafford is expected to receive a base salary of just $ 9.5 million in 2021, but it is not yet clear whether the new Lions leadership would be open to move him. Dak Prescott is the best defender looking for a free agency, but we wouldn’t bet he would leave the Dallas Cowboys.
The Colts can also target Newton if they believe that New England’s offensive structure and weak talent in skill positions are more responsible for their difficulties than the QB’s own inconsistency. Other imminent UFAs include Jameis Winston, Mitchell Trubisky and Andy Dalton.
From a draft perspective, New England and Indianapolis may be in the mix for the second and third tier quarterback perspectives available this spring.
Colts currently have the 21st overall choice in the NFL’s 2021 Draft. Would they risk Mac Alabama from Alabama if the Patriots overtook him in 15th place? Or consider an aggressive exchange for someone like Trey Lance from North Dakota?
Regardless of how Ballard and his team decide to proceed in this off-season, the effects of Rivers’ retirement will be felt in New England as well.
