How obsolete gas storage containers in London were transformed into a luxury apartment complex

There used to be a lot of gasometers in the UK. An unfortunate name, perhaps – they were once called gasometers, but that is progress for you – these huge metal containers helped to store gas to supply urban areas. That was in the 1850s, of course, when you needed a lot of things to help keep the lights on. Now, technology has made the proud gasholder irrelevant, and they have been consistently demolished since 1999. Some resisted, however, including a trio at London’s King’s Cross. Rather than tearing down the surviving frames, architects WilkinsonEyre transformed them into a collection of luxury apartment homes dubbed – yup – Gasholders.

It was not a small undertaking. The cast iron frames were dismantled and restored before being erected in another location with the new buildings. Each tower was made to have a different height, a tribute to how the original vessels rose and fell depending on their internal pressure. As soon as the frames, including 123 columns, were refurbished (a process that took more than two years), they were put back in place around the new residential structures.

One of the covers, a $ 9.6 million duplex unit, sits at the top of the tallest stack. The 2,829-square-foot, three-bedroom residence was furnished by Suna Interior Design. A Paul Smith rug in the room, called Carnival, serves as the inspiring cue with its shades of brown, orange and blue. This palette persists throughout the house through a moon-B chair with color-blocked Charles Kalpakian in the main hall and a bronze chandelier by Tigermoth Lighting in the dining room. If you admire the setup enough, it’s yours – for an extra $ 311,900. But there is more to the place than just elegant staging. On a more practical level, all kitchen appliances are from Gaggenau, and you get an additional 1,009 square feet of space through the private rooftop terrace, which offers a 360 degree view of London.

Residents will also have access to all the amenities that Gasholders has to offer, including spa and gym, resident’s lounge, screening room, games room and 24-hour concierge. An unusual advantage is the courtyard, located between the three buildings where the frames from the Victorian era fit together.
