“There was a lot of flirting because of the fax.”
Matthew Perry has the best friends in the world! , he convinced Julia Roberts to appear in Friends with a little help from the sitcom writers.
“Matthew invited her to join the program,” said Kevin Bright, the series co-creator The Hollywood Reporter. “She replied to him: ‘Write me an article on quantum physics and I will do it.'”
“My understanding is that Matthew went out and wrote an article and faxed it to her the next day,” he continued.
Alexa Junge, an ex Friends writer, said the duo was very flirting while exchanging faxes, so Perry sought help from some of the show’s writers.
“She was giving him questionnaires like, ‘Why should I go out with you?’ And everyone in the writer’s office helped him explain why, ”she said.
“He could have done very well without us, but there was no doubt that we were at Team Matthew and trying to make it happen for him,” added Junge. “There was a lot of flirting because of the fax.”
Perry managed to woo Roberts with his charm and witty humor. She ended up appearing in a 1996 episode called “The One After the Super Bowl,” and sparks were definitely flying when she performed alongside the actor.
“I don’t know if she fell in love with Matthew at the time, but they soon started dating,” Jeff Astrof, another ex Friends writer remembered. “I felt like Cyrano [de Bergerac]. “
“Like, Chandler is going to date Julia Roberts and I’m going home for my horrible girlfriend,” he continued joking. “This is my memory of that episode.”
The pair kept their relationship very private and they dated from 1995 to 1996. But luckily, we will always have their Friends episode.
