The disappearance of Sarah Everard, 33, in south London, sparked a conversation about the violence of men against women.

Many women talked about their fears and personal experiences.

How common are murders of women?

In the year up to March 2020, 207 women were killed in Great Britain (England, Scotland and Wales). This means that about one in five murders was carried out by women.

The number of women victims was lower than in the previous year, when 241 women were killed. This was the highest number in a decade.

A survey by the Femicide Census – an organization that collects information on male violence against women – estimates that across the UK 1,425 women were killed by men in the 10 years to 2018.

This is about one death every three days.

Who are the victims attacked?

In the last decade, there were 4,493 male victims and 2,075 female victims (31%) in England and Wales.

More than nine out of 10 killers were men.

About 57% of female victims were killed by someone they knew, most commonly a partner or ex-partner. This compares to 39% of men.

The other victims were killed by strangers – 13% for women and 30% for male victims – or no suspects were identified.

More than 70% of women were killed in their own homes – twice as many as men.

What about other violent attacks?

It is estimated that about 1.3% of women were victims of violent crimes in the year ending in March 2020, compared to 2% of men.

Most violent attacks are committed by people the victim knows – 92% for women and 79% for men.

How common are sexual offenses?

In 2017, the last year for which data are available, the Office of National Statistics (ONS) estimated that 3.4 million women have been victims of sexual violence in their lives. This includes one million raped or faced with an attempted rape.

About 650,000 men suffered sexual assault.

Sexual assault was more common among younger women, with about one in 10 students saying they had suffered a sex crime in the past year.

One in five women has been a victim of persecution since the age of 16 – twice as many as men.

Estimates used the Crime Survey for England and Wales. This involves interviewing thousands of people and is seen as the best way to measure crimes, including those not reported to the police.

How many of these crimes have been solved?

The vast majority of sexual offenses are not resolved. In fact, most sexual crimes are not even reported to the police.

But only 55,000 rapes were reported to the police last year.

What about sexual harassment?

Official statistics do not provide estimates of how many women face sexual harassment.

However, research suggests that the problem is common.

A recent YouGov survey for UN Women found that seven out of ten women had suffered some form of sexual harassment in public.

That number was almost nine out of 10 for younger women.

  • More than half of the women experienced boos
  • Four out of 10 were touched or faced with unwanted touches
  • One third of the women were followed
  • One in five faced indecent exposure

How common is domestic abuse?

These numbers include all forms of abuse, including physical, emotional and financial.

There has been an increase in domestic abuse since the blockades began in March last year.

There were 444,000 crimes related to domestic violence – against men and women – in England and Wales between April and September.

That was almost one in five crimes recorded.
