How John Jancek could benefit the Volks’ defense personnel

Former Tennessee defensive coordinator John Jancek is currently serving as defensive quality control technician in Georgia.

Jancek served as the defensive coordinator for the 2013-15 Vols under coach Butch Jones, executing a hybrid scheme.

Jancek’s return to Tennessee remains in the early stages for something to materialize by joining Josh Heupel’s team.

However, Jancek could benefit the Vols ‘defense by training his current players’ staff, who are used to schemes he used in Georgia under Kirby Smart.

Smart’s defensive scheme is similar to former Tennessee coach Jeremy Pruitt, the system that Jancek has learned.

Below are some looks that Smart directed in Georgia and that Jancek could teach with a smooth transition in Tennessee.

Smart likes to show a cornerback blitz on the border side, which usually leaves a security player cover on the border side at wide receiver No. 1, creating a 2-high cover for the field side.

In Smart’s defense, CLAMP is where a cornerback plays against wide receiver No. 2 within five yards to defend the apartment.

In 3 × 1 sets, CLAMP has No. 1 and No. 2 wide receivers, and the man’s cover is on No. 3 wide receiver that is playing below (HOOK). Man coverage takes place at wide receiver # 3 when he is under, except when wide receiver # 3 is performing a curl route or going deep on an intersection route.

When an opponent lines up with 11 people on the 3 × 1 side, Smart will not be shy about executing STUBBIE. STUBBIE is when cornerbacks cover fairly and are not out of the ball. On the weak side, STUBBIE and STUMP are the same.

MONEY is the POSTER. The field cornerback will cover the press on wide receiver # 1. STAR has wide receiver # 2, six yards away, unless the third wide receiver goes to the apartment. If wide receiver # 3 enters the apartment, STAR will have it. If wide receiver # 2 goes under, STAR will also be responsible for it.

The weakness of STUBBIE is the vertical passes and the routes posted against the security devices.
